RUN for the ISLANDRUN for the ISLAND

RUN for the ISLAND is an initiative developed in 2021 to promote physical activity in the community, raise awareness for dementia risk reduction, recruit research participants and raise awareness for the ISLAND Project.

Wicking Dementia Centre’s Dr Edward Hill, Dr Jessica Collins, Josh Eastgate and James Brady were put through their paces as they completed the Tasmanian Trail – a 480km fundraising run – from Devonport in the state’s North, to Tasmania’s southernmost settlement of Dover – in only five days.

Each RUN for the ISLAND runner completed a 25-kilometre stretch of the Tasmanian Trail each day, with the team stopping in at designated regional population centres to promote health and wellbeing factors recognised at reducing dementia risk.

RUN for the ISLAND is a fundraising initiative designed to support the Wicking Dementia Centre’s flagship study The ISLAND Project, a research programme aimed at creating a world-first in reducing incidence of dementia across a whole population.

The two-pronged initiative also used stops at regional centres to recruit participants into the dementia risk reduction Project and encourage community engagement in healthy lifestyle activities.

Run mapThe thick-soled RUN for the ISLAND crew were seeking an initial target of raising $25,000, which will enable The ISLAND Project to investigate avenues of potential dementia risk factors such as genetic biomarkers and associated proteins.

Dementia is a devastating syndrome and a leading cause of death in Australia, with no known cure.

As such, a focus has now been placed on uncovering prevention strategies to prolong people’s quality of life and reduce instances in the face of Australia’s ageing population.

The success of studies such as the Wicking Dementia Centre’s ISLAND Project are crucial for understanding potential causes and prevention strategies.

The team are calling for support from Tasmanian businesses, organisations and individuals to assist in funding additional avenues of research.
