Men's Health Week

This Men's Health Week, we wanted to highlight the importance of men's health in our community.

Men's Health Week

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare men are more likely than women to be overweight or obese, exceed the recommended weekly alcohol guidelines, smoke cigarettes daily, and suffer from cardiovascular diseases. They are also less likely to meet the daily fruit and vegetable guidelines.

The Department of Health and Ageing have posted two short videos you may find interesting. In them Dr Lucas de Toca answers the questions:

  • What is Men's Health Week?
  • How can men build healthier outcomes and reduce the risk of chronic disease?
  • How can men better engage with Australia's health services?

One of the main points in these conversations is the importance of having a GP you see regularly and can build a relationship with.

Dr de Toca also notes the importance of social connection for overall health. Men's sheds are spaces where men can meet and work on meaningful projects while building social connectedness. If you are interested, you can find your local men's shed here.

Here at the ISLAND Project, we know 72% of our participants are female, yet to be representative of Tasmania we need to have a higher proportion of males in our study. If you know a man over 50 who would benefit from being involved in the ISLAND Project, why not encourage them to sign up? Let's try to reduce dementia risk and increase men's health outcomes at the same time!
