Communicating Dementia Risk Factors

Designing effective public health messages that work for everyone is challenging. It is hard to communicate complex health messages, and areas such as dementia risk reduction are still unfamiliar to many people. It is unclear whether people who speak English as an additional language can engage with, and relate to, our current dementia risk reduction messages.

In their new publication, researchers at Wicking worked with participants in the Preventing Dementia Massive Open Online Course (PDMOOC) who speak English as a second language. Together they co-designed three infographics (summaries of information with images). These infographics aim to enhance understanding of dementia prevention. From this collaboration, the team generated some criteria about how to best design health prevention infographics that will resonate with the intended audience.

This work will help future public health campaigns to provide more meaningful and accessible visual messages to diverse audiences.
